Winemaker's Tasting Notes
Aromas of warm, sweet orange caramel strudel develop nicely into mature Pinot Noir fruit characters. The ripe red fruit flavors include hints of butterscotch with a touch of mushrooms and dried flower petals. The silky dried cranberry finish lingers seductively.
Vineyards
- Santa Maria Valley is one of California’s coolest grape growing appellations with one of the longest growing seasons in the world. The well-drained, lean soils and direct access to cool Pacific Ocean breezes and fog funneled to the vineyards by transverse mountain ranges make it one of America’s premier growing regions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
- A wetter cooler winter and spring delayed bud break. The grapes had exceptionally long hang time to develop concentrated flavors and intense color.
- The cool weather trend continued into the summer months, which were moderate with a few heat spikes. Early autumn brought a string of warm days developing well-balanced sugars and acids on the fruit.
Winemaking
- Whole clusters of ripe hand-picked grapes are destemmed with minimal crushing to maximize fruit-forward intensity.
- Two and three days of “cold soaks” prior to initiating fermentation, amplified lively inherent fruity characteristics.\
- Gentle sprinkling pumpovers and rack and return cap management regimes minimized tannin extraction.
- The wine was aged in equal parts new, one and two-year-old slowly toasted French oak barrels for 16 months.
- The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered to retain delicate nuances and fruit integrity.
